Mydear Tumman,
Thank you so much for sending me your photograph
with its gracious inscription.
I am sorry indeed that our work together has been
nipped in the bud, but I cherish the hope that our friend-
ship will continue to ripen, and that there may be occasions
when it may be of service to both our countries and to the
common causes they pursue.
I venture to send you by Winant's trusty hand
a small token which I had hoped to bring back myself to
Potsdam. May it record great words of peace and union
between the British Commonwealth and the United States.
That is my dearest hope.
