Dear Mr. Forster:
I have received your note,
together with the sketch of the
President which you forwarded and
am sorry indeed that I must again
give you an unfavorable reply. The
fact is, however, these opening
months of the new Congress are such
busy ones for the President, that
we are asking his friends to excuse
x72-7
him from all autographing for the
time being. I know, however, you
will understand and will wish to
cooperate.
We are returning your sketch
under separate cover and I regret
to state that it was torn in transit.
I thought I had better explain that
the damage was not done here at the
White House.
With all good wishes,
Sincerely yours,
MATTHEW J. CONNELLY
Secretary to the President
M. Forster
