We were invited by SAC to participate in a meeting
this afternoon to prepare a reply to Tito's message
to SAC on Venezia Giulia. (REDEPTEL 417, May 1) SAC's
reply which has been sent to Tito acknowledges receipt
of the latter's message reported in our 1855 of May 2,
Noon. He informs Tito that General Freyburg has taken
Trieste and that the garrison of 7,000 Germans have
surrendered. The message goes on to say now that SAC
has possession of Trieste he intends to proceed with his
plans as outlined in his conversations with Tito in
Belgrade (REOURTEL 786 of March 2, Midnight),
And he
expresses confidence that Tito will cooperate with him.
It is clear that Tito and the Partisms while un-
doubtedly making good progress in military operations in
Venezia Giulia are not attaining anywhere near what they
are broadcasting they are taking and it is now SAC's
intention
