Gouge\nDecember 14, 1957\nMr. Martin White\nExecutive Secretary\nAmerican Council on NATO\n22 East 67th Street\nNew York City\nDear Mr. white:\nI am writing this in reference to the proposal by Mr. Nicholas de-\nRochefort calling for an Alliance or Association of NATO veterans.\nAs you probably know, the Veterans Comittee is organised and parti-\ncipated in by the six major veterans organizations in America. On\nNovember 23, 1957 this Committee met in New York with Captain Eddie\nRickenbacker and I to consider future projects and plans.\nMr. deRochefort appeared before the Committee and presented his project\nwhich was received with a good amount of interest and enthusiasm. In\nfact, it stimulated so much interest that it was agreed that each rep-\nresentative present would immediately consult his respective organisa-\ntion to ascertain if this plan could be endorsed and supported and each\nwas to prepare suggestions relative to its implementation. There was\nevery indication that this proposal could be supported; that it offered\ntremendous possibilities and the Committee would shortly endorse its\npurposes.\nOur primary concern now is the availability of funds for carrying on a\nproject such as this NATO proposal. This summer, the Veterans Committee\ncompleted its Number One Project, a European Tour by the six National\nCommanders. A People to People endeavor whereby the six American veterans'\nleaders met veteran leaders abroad. Upon completion of this project,\nPresident Eisenhower complimented the Committee when I presented him a\nreport on this project.\nAND\nOur funds are nearly expended and it is necessary that we insure our\nRECORDS\nSERVICE'\nfuture financial stability before a new project is selected.\nI would be delighted to report to the members of the Veterans Committee"
