Gouge December 14, 1957 Mr. Martin White Executive Secretary American Council on NATO 22 East 67th Street New York City Dear Mr. white: I am writing this in reference to the proposal by Mr. Nicholas de- Rochefort calling for an Alliance or Association of NATO veterans. As you probably know, the Veterans Comittee is organised and parti- cipated in by the six major veterans organizations in America. On November 23, 1957 this Committee met in New York with Captain Eddie Rickenbacker and I to consider future projects and plans. Mr. deRochefort appeared before the Committee and presented his project which was received with a good amount of interest and enthusiasm. In fact, it stimulated so much interest that it was agreed that each rep- resentative present would immediately consult his respective organisa- tion to ascertain if this plan could be endorsed and supported and each was to prepare suggestions relative to its implementation. There was every indication that this proposal could be supported; that it offered tremendous possibilities and the Committee would shortly endorse its purposes. Our primary concern now is the availability of funds for carrying on a project such as this NATO proposal. This summer, the Veterans Committee completed its Number One Project, a European Tour by the six National Commanders. A People to People endeavor whereby the six American veterans' leaders met veteran leaders abroad. Upon completion of this project, President Eisenhower complimented the Committee when I presented him a report on this project. AND Our funds are nearly expended and it is necessary that we insure our RECORDS SERVICE' future financial stability before a new project is selected. I would be delighted to report to the members of the Veterans Committee
