The President
12/13/69 1:28 p.m.
P said one other point--the UPI story on the Vietnam talks-- this had to
come from State. [Pread an excerpt from a newspaper article. ] P said
somebody is really putting that out. K said it's total transparent non-
sense; very cheap prppaganda.
P said when are you going to have the backgrounder? P said he would
like to see one on Vietnam and one on general things. K said on Mon-
day and he would make sure Ron plants a few questions on negotiations.
P said right, make sure of that.
P said this idea of not replacing Lodge, we can't let them make a capital
case out of that; let's let them worry about it. K said you think I should
have a backgrounder after you are on TV? P said why not before? P
said if they did it at 4:00, they couldn't run it until you've been on. K
said right; go on at 4:00; tell them what you're going to say. P said
we'd really dominate the news that way, really get in and knock some
of this crap down.
P aid on the atrocity thing, I think it's quieted down. K said definitely.
P said this is something.
Percy
P said Pikxxx suggests that no national incident since the death of Martin
Percy
Luther Kingx has such a strong response, and RXXXXXXX knows who these
people are [ the Black Panthers --they're not kids. K said they are tel-
ling the Algerians how they plan to overthrow the government. P said
he talked with Percy about Johnson's son-in-law thing. Johnson was mad:
there's a difference between it's being brought up as a family thing and
as a press release. P said the guy who made the charge is a peacenik.
P said Johnson was really outgaged about the whole thing. P said Butter-
fiedl sat on his ass and didn't get anything donw. Who made the attack;
what actually happened. If Johnson knew these things, I should have.
P said can you find out.
