Sec. Rogers/Kissinger
11:58 a.m. - 3/18/72
R:
Hi, Henry.
K:
Bill, I was just talking to the President about various aspects of the
summit and the problem of consulting our allies. He was wondering
if you would go to Europe around May 1 for a couple of days to meet
with Heads of Government and Foreign Ministers and the NATO group.
R:
Sure, that's fine.
K:
And that would be about 3 weeks before. In other words, they can
say we take their views into account. So if you agree, I guess it
would take 4 or 5 days to do in all.
R:
Fine. I have to check with the schedule and see how it looks.
K:
He thought May 1, give or take a day.
R:
Fine, Henry. I'll take a look at it and then I'11 recommend a schedule
for the President to look at.
K:
Fine, I will leave it in your hands. His idea was to visit the big 4 and
maybe the NATO council.
R:
I have to stop in Ireland - maybe I can stop on the way.
K:
You can do that too.
R:
The Foreign Minister wants to come here but wants to wait until I
come there.
K:
Right.
R:
You know I am afraid of this Watson thing. Wayne Hayes is trying to
have an investigation on him now. It would not assume this importance if
it weren't for the China trip and this bit with Anderson. What he (Anderson)
is doing now is going around stimulating information. What happens is a
guy gets drunk and makes a fool of himself.
K:
He didn't know what he was coming back for.
R:
He must have. I gave him a hint.
K:
Well, there is no excuse for it. If he had picked a day for maximum
embarrassment, He couldn't have done better.
