COLSON we SUBJECT: Meeting with: Robert Finch, H.R. Haldeman Charles W. Colson Tuesday, March 16, 1971 5:00 p.m. I. PURPOSE To discuss youth issues and the 18-20 year old vote. II. BACKGROUND A. This meeting is the result of a Finch/Colson memorandum to Haldeman of December 9, 1970 (attached as Tab A). B. Poll data indicates that we do not stand well politically with the 18-year old vote; a better organized effort is necessary. III. PROBABLE TALKING POINTS A. Youth Attitudes: Young people believe that we have rejected their generation; they feel alienated. They tend to stick together; hence, criticism of their life styles (for example, long hair), tends to cause even those who agree with us to feel a part of the group being rejected. The answer here probably lies more in what we say and how we say it rather than what we do. EXECUTIVE March 27, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR ED HARPER This is in response to your note of March 15 with regard to Chuck Colson's mailing operation in the Re-election Campaign. It is my understanding that the effort here was directed solely to the environment. At least this is the way it was explained to me by Colson. If you have a different impression, and after confirmation, please let me know. KEN COLE THE WHITE HOUSE Washington, D. C. Date 3/16 TO: Ken Cole Vicki Keller Peter Michel Roy Morey Ray Waldmann Pat Dodenhoff / / Ann Loftus Linda Loop FROM: Ed Harper what do you want to do about This? FYI Pls Handle Comment THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON March 15, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: ED HARPER FROM: PETER A. MICHEL pm SUBJECT: The Role of Chuck Colson's Mailing Operation in the Re-election Campaign Kathleen Balsdon, of Chuck Colson's staff, is currently developing campaign issue mailers on domestic issues. This effort is reportedly under the overall direction of the Attorney General. I learned about this effort through Dick Fairbanks who has been requested to provide the Colson operation with a summarized version of the speaker's kit fact sheet on Environment. I advised Dick not to do this work himself but to offer to review any products that the Colson people develop on these issues. In order to avoid duplication of effort and contradictory campaign materials, it is necessary that we develop greater coordination within the White House itself as well as between the White House, the RNC and 1701. I feel a brief meeting with the President would keep the staff going full steam ahead through November. Those named here are the people with whom the President has had little or no contact and it would be appropriate for each to say they have at least met with the President. This is especially important with Barker who is a Special Assistant, has been here almost a year and has never met the President.
