THE PRESIDENT:
BACKGROUND
The National Center for Voluntary Action is holding its first Awards
Dinner on February 10 at the Kennedy Center. The dinner will be
attended by approximately 400 people and one of its purposes is to
provide high visibility for the NCVA.
The Awards which are to be presented are the former "Lane Bryant¹¹
Awards which have been presented annually by the Lane Bryant Company
for the last 23 years. Now that there is a national organization that
deals with voluntary activities (NCVA), the selection and presentation
process for these Awards has been transferred to NCVA. This activity
by the organization will lend it additional prestige.
There are two categories of Awards:
Group Effort.
Individual Effort.
The recipient of the Group Effort Award is SERVE (Serve and Enrich
Retirement by Volunteer Experience), a voluntary retirement action
group from New York. The Individual Effort Award will be presented
to Mrs. Annette Giles of Pearlington, Mississippi, a Black who has
raised 40 retarded children over the last 40 years. The Awards are
in the form of plaques which you will present just prior to your remarks
at the dinner. After the dinner, the checks for $5,000 will be presented
to the recipients.
