SUGGESTED TEXT FOR OIL CONFERENCE DINNER
On behalf of the American people, I want to welcome
five you
all to Washington and to the White House. During the past
years, the leaders of ten of the nations represented here have
been visitors to this house, and I have had the privilege of visiting
of your countries. During the past year alone, I have also
had the opportunity to meet with
of the Foreign Ministers
who are here.
Thus we meet tonight not as strangers, but as friends -- -
old friends allied in our hopes, our fears, and our love of freedom.
For the past quarter century, much of the world has turned
to the nations represented here for inspiration and assistance. We
have always had divergent interests, but we have also shared
