NEWS SUMMARY THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN MAY 10, 1972 (Tuesday nets, wires, papers) Vietnam received 15-20 minutes on all nets featuring: 1) the HAK briefing where US plans for summit were emphasized and at which HAK was reportedly more emotional than usual in an impassioned defense of RN's actions; 2) One of heaviest days of US bombing of entire war and the mining operation itself which hawks finally got and US intentions as voiced by Moorer to prevent supplies from getting ashore; 3) the continuing silence from Moscow on the fate of the summit while PRC is reportedly privately pleased to see problems for Russia; 4) Sharply split opinions from the Hill where Sen. Dem. Caucus criticized escalation and for 1st time backed fund cutoff; 5) Mixed reports on GI and POW reaction; 6) Scattered but some violent antiwar protests; 7) Doubts over ARVN's ability to hold out - - and doubts over the effectiveness of RN's move with Sevareid, Brinkley and Reasoner at least mildly doubtful; 8) the likelihood of a major peace concession hidden in the militarily-oriented RN speech.
