The major stories of the day:
-- Opening of Ervin comm hearings on "complicated, confusing,
alarming story of political espionage
known as Watergate"
(CBS) led all nets, w/Cronkite noting purpose of "scrutiny" by
Sens. is "to get to bottom of what threatens to become worst
scandal in US history. 11 The 6-hour session held 11 months to
the day since the DNC break-in (noted by ABC/CBS) was "low-
key, 11 said Schorr, and produced "little new, but set the stage"
for further testimony, said ABC in lead note. But, Chancellor
noted solons got to "important questions more quickly" than it was
thought they would.
NBC introduced show w/filmed excerpt from Ervin's opening
statement on comm's intent to determine the facts and spare no
one, and ABC/CBS included other excerpts in their reports

Reports focused on
Odle's testimony he and Resiner removed some files from
Magruder's desk, apparently on Jeb's orders, shortly after
learning McCord had been arrested. Nets noted files were
thought to have concerned Gemstone, code name for the tapping
operation, the Odle stated he had not read them
ABC/NBC
also w/film as Odle described running into Liddy, who on day
after break-in, was searching for CREP's shredder, and all
nets w/film as Odle related to laughter he remarked on learning
of burglary that it couldn't happen at CREP because McCord was
head of security. One of the "light moments, 11 said Chancellor
CBS w/brief clips of Kehrli and Leeper, policeman who arrested
the men in DNC HQs.

(CBS noted) -- but "working on non-Watergate matters. 11 (NBC).
