Smith criticizes McG's "Come Home America" slogan as reminiscent of Fortress America and warns Dems off possible danger of slogan in view of much improved internatl. situation. - Film on all nets (ABC lead) of Connally formally announcing Dems for RN. JBC's announcement was expected, noted CBS Petit, but "the depth of Dem support" -- like LBJ aides Marks and Christiansen -- wasn't. Connally says it'll be a "tough, volatile campaign. and closer "than some expect, but he's confident RN will win. CBS with lengthy, negative assessment on results of US blockade on NVA's supplies. - CBS lead (ABC note) on Senate 68-25 passage of tough controls on so-called "Sat. Night Special" handguns. - In what 2 nets called "shouting match, 11 Romney criticized Schapp for interjecting political issue like VN into review of Federal Govt. disaster relief programs. Fischer attacked aggressively in the 12th game but was held to a draw by Spassky. The American leads 7-5.
