M-E ("slight progress" in C-F talks) and energy-related
stories almost completely dominated the nets w/13-16 minutes.
ENERGY
All noted high in shows that RN would interrupt holiday wkend
to meet Sat w/Laird-Love re: energy measures tho none are expected
to be announced Sat. Sun. ban on gas sales noted by CBS as high
priority for Sat. talks -- such a step would have minimal impact.
Stein call on refineries to reduce gasoline production by 6% and
increase oil for home and industry use led ABC and was noted by
NBC as a sure way to cut driving w/Stein saying "people can't con-
sume what there isn't. 11 CBS focused on Morton's telegram to
refiners along same lines.
Reflecting 10% decline in regular car sales and corresponding
boost for small cars given concern over gas shortages, GM will
close 16 plants week before Xmas, thus cutting production by
79,000. Story led NBC and was cited in CBS lead on cuts in petro-
chemical production, including plastics and the ripple effect of fuel
shortage thru US economy. CBS later had film on cuts of up to 50%
in pleasure boat production -- resulting from pinch in fiberglass and
other needed materials but also in sharp decline in sales, again the
fuel scare is the reason. Sail boats not affected.
This is 1st time since early '70 there's been such a massive
shutdown in auto industry.
Besides going overtime on small
cars, the luxury cars will continue on planned production level.
6% hike in international air fares due to increase in cost of
aviation fuel. Noted by NBC/CBS.
La. Sen. Johnston said
too much RN travel sets poor example for US to follow. "We can't
ground him. He has to have discretion to travel as he wants. But
he ought to exercise it in a little more circumspect manner and give
a little more leadership. 11
On ABC/CBS film and noted by NBC, Hechler (D-W. Va.) said
claims that more strip mining would help solve energy crisis is "a
fraud and delusion. 11 He charged crisis is being used to delay strip
controls. "The bleeding hills of Appalachia will be dealt a death
blow if RN has his way in stepping up strip mining, 11 he said.
ABC/CBS also w/film as Hechler questioned why US was exporting
