Mr. Hamlin December 12th, 1918. Da. Sochocky Mr. Roader, Dr. Sochocky RESEERCH DEPARTMENT 1. During a meeting of the Managing Board it has been decided to create a Research Department to the Application Plant of the Radium Luminous Matorial Corporation. The meaning of this Department would be Research on quality of the material, standardization and governing of application of it, that is, this Department would decide what material, what amount of it and how it should be applied to each object. Every- body will realize the great importance of such a Department but also the fact that to make that Department efficient and exercise its full value, it is absolutely necessary to have the heartiest co-operation of the directive forcos of all of us. Full details of its program will be discussed by the writer, Mr. Hamlin and also the Selling Force of the Company. 2. The second important item concerning every Department directly, is the weighing of the material to be applied on. Due to the not syst em- atized needs of the Application Plant, there is a continuous over- byrden on the girls who weigh the material, the orders coming most any time of the day, sometimes as lato as half past four and there is always a rush, therefore, it is impossible to control absolutely the correctness of the weighing and the writer might say that weekly there might be differences in the weights amounting up to $1000.00 a week. The writer suggests to arrange ordering of the materials in such a way so they should be delivered before twelve A.M. The girls carrying material from Application Department to the factory and vice versa should be prohibited to e arry the bottles some- times uncorked and somotimes entirely open, many times in the rain. To eliminate errors in the weighing the writer decided to order a weighing machine by means of which losses could be greatly climinated and the weighing speeded up. To do this he needs specifications off Mr Hamlin of the quantities of material expressed in milligrams which he uses most- ly so that several slides could be prepared for each separate material. Upon receipt of these specifications machine will be ordered and install- ed at shortest possible time. 3. There are in Application Building sweepings of the floors and tables containing big amount of the material, they will be worked out for the recovery of the radium. It is advisable that these sweepings should be kept free from papers and other waste. Temporarily they have to be kept in Application Department until further notice.
