I can report to you on the very highest authority that the high command
decided to agree on the dismissal of Gen. MacArthur for one reason only,
namely, he made the mistake of opposing the nation's foreign policy
publicly, persistently. That is not the function of a soldier. The
high command regards his military achievement as strictly wonderful,
nothing less.
The point with the President and with all his
diplomatic and military advisers in Washington is this--they disagree
with Gen. MacArthur that we should enlarge the war in Asia by direct
action. The military advisers to the chief executive inist that
such a course would risk all the land forces of the United States in
a possible endless conflict on the steps of Asia. (Reports on messages
received by Congressmen and on Republican meeting on Capitol Hill) .
Curiously there is a split, even here, where there is a choosing up
of sides. Sen. Duff of Pennsylvania openly supported the President's
decision. The present head of the Republican party, Gov. Dewey of
New York, struck hard at Washington's bungling in the Far East but he
did not heartily endorse the policies suggested by Gen. MacArthur.
Likewise, Gov. Earl Warren of California said only that this is the
sad ending of the military career of the world's greatest soldier,
nothing to agree with MacArthur's proposed policies. And be it noted
that the three last named men may have more to say than any others
about the heavy convention votes of their states at the next Republican
convention and not one of them endorsed Gen. MacArthur's proposed
