The new Strand

On the left is the Church of Mary-le-Strand near it, to the right, a lofty modern building - the Gaiety Restaurant - light in tone, and in the background the Waldorf Hotel. In front of the new buildings is an empty space, enclosed by a hoarding, with young trees growing along the pavement on two sides of it. Near the corner of this empty space is a triangular staging, surmounted by a crane, erected during the progress of a new building in July, 1908. The black patch is raised, so as to cover the window, and there are three slight prominences on its upper outline. There is a dark line, slanting from left to right, which makes an acute angle with the straight line mentioned in XI. There are still four lines in the corner.

The old Justiciary Court House, Glasgow

In the foreground flows the Clyde, chiefly in shadow. It is crossed on the left by a bridge, of which only half of one span is visible. Above it rises a tall church tower and other buildings. Across the river stands the old Court-House, its stone facade in strong sunlight; beyond the deeply shaded end a row of houses extends to the right edge of the plate. The work carried much further both in dry point and etching, the river being now shaded with etched lines up to the right end of the plate. In addition to two boats near the bottom of the plate towards the left, part of a third is now seen, in which are a seated and a standing man; a plank is thrown across from this to the larger boat. In place of a rudimentary wooden structure on the roof, just to right of the flag-staff, a tall square framework has been etched, with a man kneeling on the roof beside it. Numerous other alterations.

Across the river stands the old Court-House, its stone facade in strong sunlight; beyond the deeply shaded end a row of houses extends to the right edge of the plate. The smoke strengthened, and much new work in the sky, the upper portion be in covered by a tangle of dry point lines with fairly strong burr. A little post or flag-staff, which rises above the shaded end of the Court-House, is inconspicuous, being no darker than the sky behind it.

The old arcade

A covered alley in which light falls from the left upon the opposite wall and a stone pavement. The human occupants of the arcade vary in every state. In the foreground to the left is one figure only, a stout woman in a shawl standing with her back to us. On the right, a little way back, a woman walks with a heavy burden on her back, and a child sits on the ground.

The old jail

Across the back stretches a long, low building of massive construction with few windows ; it is the back of the Justiciary Court. At a higher elevation to the left stand houses, one of which has a tower of Italian appearance beside its chimney. Lower down on the same side is a long shed, with the name (S)teven & Son, at the end on which the light falls. A strong shadow from the roof is cast by the declining sun upon the wall of the jail. In the foreground all is desolation and squalor ; under a high wall on the left are rag-pickers, and near a fence, more distinctly lighted, on the opposite side groups of people are seen waiting idly or raking the rubbish ; near the middle of the jail are a horse and cart. The dry point work in the upper part of the sky partly burnished out. Some faint lines have been added just to left of the flagstaff over the middle of the jail, and on the right between the end of the jail and the edge of the plate.

The old market place, Norwich - No. 1.

The buildings over the market place display much inscriptions as MARKET CAFE., J. PULCHER'S DINING ROOMS, etc. Beneath are many stalls shaded with awnings, along the edge of a busy street. In the background, to the right is the church of St. Peter Mancroft.

The old palace, Culross

Towards the left is a house with a high-pitched roof, in which are four dormer windows with little gables. More to the right is a shed with a wooden gable-end and doors opened wide; beyond it a tall tree rises behind a wall. To the left of the open shed Is a horse harnessed to a cart; a man Is in the cart, and two men stand near the wheel; behind them a spade leans against the open door. On the extreme left is the end of a cart with its shafts turned up; the wheel is cut by the end of the plate. Three fowls are seen in front of the open door.
