Hopkinton members of Grand Army of the Republic, Post 14

Black and white photograph of three elderly American Civil War veterans posing in dress uniforms in front of a draped Union flag that originally designated their post in the war (Post 14). The setting is outdoors in a grassy field, though their surroundings are obscured by the flag and the glare of the sun. They were members of a Hopkinton veterans' society named for Charles C. Phillips, a soldier from Hopkinton who was killed in the war during his second tour of duty. From left to right, the men in the photograph are Edwin Newton, Sidney Whitney, and Samuel Smith. Their names have been identified from a small strip of paper originally attached to the photo. All three of them have grey hair, mustaches, and wide-brimmed hats, as well as dark-colored buttoned dress jackets with star-shaped medals pinned to them. Edwin and Sidney also have "G.A.R." emblem pins attached to their hats. Samuel is wearing round glasses.

Hopkinton railroad bridge

Photo post card of railroad bridge in Hopkinton. Black and white image takes up most of photo postcard. Train tracks lead to a square shaped bridge in the center of the image. Bridge has a person standing on it. Lettering in the right-hand corner reads "N.Y. N.H. + H, R.R. Bridge Hopkinton M.A. Pub. by F. Phipps 3009" Bridge is constructed of rectangular blocks of stone. On East Maine Street.

Hist So. Nov 29, 1972 by way of R. Ward. Thompson Shoe Factory on left. Top 3rd floor of which later removed and bldg. became car barn. 1940s this site cleared and Colella's Supermarket and Bank built here.

Photograph showing a brick house on corner of Hayden Rowe Street and Main Street, Hopkinton. The former Episcopal Church (now the library) is also shown. The house was built on the site of the Price Manor 1890 occupied by Dr. Patten, then Dr. Thompson and Arthur Chesmore (1971). It also was used as a bank in the 1800's.

Taken from Main St.; house has unusual front gable roof line with long slant; small front porch in corner, man in straw hat (house owner Mr. Roswell Frail) sitting in chair placed in front yard, 2 dogs are lying on lawn next to him, large urn with plants near him, large tree in front yard, decorative structures over windows; corbels on roof lines; shrubs, plants, vines in yard. Handwriting on back of cardboard mat mentions J.R. Phipps. He may have been the photographer.
