Main Street, "early twentieth century"

Westward view of Main Street, Hopkinton. In the foreground of the photo is a tree with a piece of cloth tied around with it and some lumber boards stacked next to it, as well as a cylinder-shaped public horse watering trough. On the left side of the background, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Hopkinton Public Library can be seen. The right side of the background contains the Park House hotel (also known as the Highland House) and the Town Hall. The road is unpaved, and the buildings on the right have buntings on their storefronts. Despite the title card that was included with this photo at a much later date, it is most likely from the 1890s and not the early 20th century.

Park House Hotel, Town Hall and Highland Business Block buildings are visible, as is a trolley on rails in the distance (which appears to be stopped). The cylindrical stone mass sticking out of the ground to the right of the photo is a public horse watering trough. The season is clearly winter, as there are large patches of snow on the ground.

Members of Edward Hopkins Fire House with Westboro Fife and Drum Corps

Black-and-white photograph of a large group of men and teenage boys posing together, consisting of both members of the Edward Hopkins Fire House in Woodville and the Westboro Fife and Drum Corps. The latter group are carrying drums and sticks, and are identified by the writing on their largest drum. There are approximately 60 firemen present, most of whom have the number "2" on their shirts, and they are on average significantly older than the boys from Westboro. Harold S. Wood is apparently one of the firemen in the photo. His name is handwritten on the back of the photo card. However, his age at the time the photo was taken is uncertain.

Old Stone Mill and boot factory across Mill Pond, Woodville

Black-and-white photograph looking across Mill Pond in Woodville towards a complex containing (from left to right in the photo) the original Woodville cotton mill (c. 1820), the Old Stone Mill (c. 1830), and the G&F boot factory that was owned by Granby and Francis Wood (c. 1867). Further to the right in the background is a building that has been identified as a storage warehouse for the G&F factory. It is thought to have also been used by the Calvin Bridges boot and shoe factory. Snow can be seen on the ground, so the photo was taken during the winter, perhaps during the same day as 1000.001.514.

Old Stone Mill, Woodville

Black-and-white photograph of the "Old Stone Mill" in Woodville, which was constructed in the 1830s to manufacture cotton cloth and twine. Also in the photo is the G&F Boot Factory, and the Reservoir House in the background. The photo was taken in wintertime and there is snow on the ground. The scene is located in the center of Woodville at the lower mill dam. The mill was constructed in the 1830s by brothers William and Col. Albert Wood. In 1867, Granby and Francis Wood also began operating a boot factory nearby, which was named after themselves. At some point when the mill was still standing, it was alleged to be the second oldest mill in the country.

Original Cheney homestead

This is a black and white photograph taken sometime between 1876-1878 in front of the original homestead of the Cheney family in America, on School St. in Bear Hill, Hopkinton, MA. Given the limitations of photography technology at the time, the photo is very small, and the edges of tree branches appear blurry from swaying in the wind during the long exposure time. Next to this one tree can be seen the house of the Cheney family, a small, one-story structure of wood with two chimneys. Smoke is seen billowing out of the right chimney. It is known that the roof shingles of the house were handmade by Harry Cheney himself. Behind the tree is the Cheney's barn with a wide open entrance. The Cheney family are lined up on their front lawn to pose for the photo through its necessarily long exposure. Joining them are Clarinda Gould, identified as a mother of a family member, and another person possibly named Melvin Fiba. The figures and faces are barely discernable due to the photo's miniscule size. Two sets of two poles with a rope strung across them have been planted into the lawn, presumably to be used for a clothesline.

Black and white original photograph mounted on cardboard, 8" x 6". Cardboard backing is 10 x 12. Nine young people pose on a porch rail sitting sideways and looking forward. The Victorian style house with scalloped shingles is currently,(2016,) # 4 Hayden Rowe. Six women, two men and one boy are seen wearing somewhat formal clothing. Some wearing hats, one with ribbons and a long braid. Hand written ink on the back are the following names: Left to right, Jessie Archibauld, Abbie Pingree, Harry Banta, Lulu Archibauld, Maud Pingree, Will Patten, Pearl Hannaford (?) Kate Thompson and ? Frail.

Young man in his twenties or early thirties; large bushy mustache, wavy hair parted in center, with pince-nez eyeglasses that rest on the bridge of his nose without earpieces. Wearing a high white collar, waistcoat and suit jacket, along with an ascot-style necktie with a rounded triangle-shaped pin on its knot. Photo taken against blank, light-colored studio background. The back of the photo's cardboard mat mounting has handwritten text: "Bush Mrs. R.I. Frail. Main St Cor [corner] of Pleasant St. Bush" "Mrs. R.I. Frail" refers to the wife of Roswell I. Frail, who lived on the corner of Main and Pleasant St. in Hopkinton, MA circa 1880 - 1910. It is unknown if "Bush" was the name of this man, and what his relation to Mrs. Frail was.
