Dear Mr. Buchen:
I was in hope that your letter and sundry information on
Clarence Kelley that you sent me was going to alleviate
my fears, but it only convinced me that Nixon is still in
the White House but now his name is Ford.
I assume that you are a man of reasonable education, and
it surprises me that you would sign your name to such a
conglomeration of horrendous nothings. You go to such

the hell does that have to do with his taking illegal
gifts or services from the Bureau?
Obviously, Mr. Buchen, you are a rubber stamp attorney
who was only obeying orders like all the others that had
"no choice" but to back up the decision of their presi-
dent. Please assume that there are a few politically
aware people that have the intelligence to read and
understand the meaning of what is written. When you say
that Mr. Kelley did not know or understand where certain
gifts were coming from, or who was providing certain
services for him, it is beyond my comprehension. Did he

Dear Mr. President;
4
How under the sun could Clarence M. Kelley, get to be head of the
FBI, with the back ground he has ? To think he witnessed for the
Communist AIMS, and against the FBI agents, who were killed at Pine
Ridge, during the trial at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Every one was just appalled over Wounded Knee of 73. Who was backing th
the AIMS ? From the reports of Clarence Kelley, he was helping back
up those criminal Communist AIMS. They said the criminal, has nothing
to fear under Clarence Kelley. We have certainly seen that here in our
own county, and State. Our States Attorneys and the Attorney General,
are backing up criminals.
No wonder the AIMS howled, when Richard Held was being transfered
from Minneapolis to Washington. Those AIMS knew they had the backing
of the Government, or they would never have done the destruction in
Washington, D.C. and Wounded Knee. What a shame, we can't trust our
public officials.
Mr. President; please get the Kelley out of the office immediately,
and see to it that he is prosecuted along with these AIMS. If Mr. Held
is the FBI, he should be, he can give you a lot of information on
Wounded Knee.
Mr. Kelley testified that the FBI, didn't consider the AIMS
objectionable, subversive or unAmerican. No real American could agree
with such as that. Please see to it that we get some one at the head
of the FBI, that is a real American ?
We need men today like George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln, who
had the power of God in their lives, and courage enough to stand up and show

Dear Mr. Sweeney:
In behalf of the President, I
am acknowledging your letter of
September 9th.
I regret your disagreement with the
President's judgment concerning the
services of Director Clarence Kelley.
A great many people, including those
familiar with all the facts and
circumstances, have endorsed the
continuation of Director Kelley in
office. Also, Governor Carter
declined to say that he would act to
relieve Director Kelley in the event
the Governor were successful in the
current election.

Sir:
/
Hurrah for Jimmy Carter & his comments on YOUR Gestopo chief Kelley.
My hurrah is for two reasons:
1. Carter is willing to speak his opinion even if it makes some
people mad. A president can't be all things to all men and he
at least stands up and is willing to be counted.
2. He is making it plain to all his cohorts that he will not
tolerate the hanky panky you have allowed to go on in the
government. Kelley is just another name of a violator of the
law to join your long list of NIXON, AGNEW, ETC
It appears justice is only extracted from non-republicans
Your comments about Kelley repaying the government for services he did
not know (a bald face lie) were given is laughable. How about Randolph
Hearst repaying the Hibernia Bank $10,000.00 and dropping all charges
against Patty?
Your comments about no compassion for Kelley are laughable too - when I
wrote you about compassionate for a kidnapped Patty Hearst your underling
replied that you could not comment on a case in court---SO WITH KELLEY YOU
KILL IT BEFORE IT EVEN GETS TO COURT. He is supposed to be an example
and yet he is more guilty than most of the people his gestopo catches.
When more corruption is discovered it will be covered up or pardoned by
you but thank God you only have a few more months in office
A disgusted citizen,

Dear Mr. President:
My wholehearted congratulations to you on your recent decision
exonerating Clarence Kelley, Director of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, of any wrongdoing. I believe I speak not only for
law enforcement but also for the people when I say that we are sick
and tired of the nitpicking that is being conducted by the news
media.
Four months ago after conferring with Congressman Robert McClory,
I made the decision that I would endorse you. As a Democratic leader
in my community, needless to say, it is being met with a great deal
of opposition by my party.

Dear Mr. Galanti:
In behalf of the President, I acknowledge
your letter to him of September 14.
In regard to Director Kelley, I enclose
information concerning the conclusion
reached by the President.
You also refer to questions concerning
Senator Dole, but I find no basis for
the questions.
The President's policy in regard to the
abortion situation is not ambiguous. As
President, he is bound to carry out the
laws as interpreted by the United States
Supreme Court, even though he personally
objects to abortion on demand. From the
time he was a Congressman, he has expressed
his support of a constitutional amendment
which would leave to the States the right
of regulating the availability of abortions.
Best wishes.

Sir:
I was extremely dismayed at your refusal to remove Mr.
Clarence Kelley as Director of the F.B.I. for what is a
clear violation of the law. Your "compassion" argument
leaves me cold. It is another example of the kind of
"reasoning" that led to your unconscionable pardon of
Richard Nixon.
There can be one possible benefit from your decision in
the Kelley case and that is hopefully you will spare us (the
American people) any campaign retoric about restoring faith
in the integrity of the government in Washington. Of course
it would have been difficult for you to argue that position
in light of your selection of Senator Dole as your vice-
presidential running mate. His involvement in the ITT
convention offer of 1972 as well as the still questionable
$5000 or $6000 campaign contribution from Gulf Oil Company
demonstrates that your concept of governmental integrity is
not much better than that of your predecessor.
I should also state that I am very much opposed to your
position on the abortion issue. I really should qualify that
by saying I really don't know your position because according
to one of your assistant press secretary's (as reported in
the Indianapolis Star) the position of the republican party
is not against abortions but in favor of the right to life of
unborn children. That is campaign double talk of the worst
stripe. I gather from that that you are in favor of abortion
unless the fetus is destroyed. This obviously is a medical
impossibility. Of course, the abortion issue should be of
minor significance in the 1976 presidential election. The
main issue should be the incredible record of mismanagement
of the Nixon-Ford administration over the past 8 years. If
the American electorate keeps that point in mind I am sure
Governor Carter will overwhelm you at the polls in November.

Dear Mr. Buchen:
Time Magazine, September 13, 1976, printed an article
entitled, "Beware Agents Bearing Gifts. 11 An excerpt is as follows:
"According to an FBI source, Kelley's wife, who
died of cancer last November, had asked Kelley
in 1973 to get the valances. Preoccupied, Kelley
told his driver, Agent Thomas Moten, to take care
of the matter. Having served on Hoover's personal
staff, Moten did as he had done in the past: asked
the exhibit section to help out. When Kelley asked
Moten how much the valances cost, the chauffeur
replied: 'What the hell, boss, it was only scrap
lumber -- forget it. 1 Until last week, Kelley did. 11
This somewhat contradicts the statement on page 4 of the report by
the Department of Justice.
Incidentally, valances are not used for protection. They are
decorative panels mounted between the ceiling and the top of a window.
There is no need for you to reply. I'm sending a copy of this
letter, your letter and the material you sent me, to Mr. Carter.
Sincerely,
