The remarkable friendship between Hoover and Truman lasted well beyond their efforts to avert starvation and disease after WWII. The last message came only six days before Hoover's death in 1964 when Hoover sent Truman a telegram wishing him a speedy recovery after a fall in his bath tub. Their most poignant exchange, however, was in December and January of 1962-63 when Hoover sent Truman a copy of his most recent book "On Growing Up". Truman responded with a gracious note and a copy of his Columbia University lectures "When Truman Speaks". Hoover replied by recalling their work together after WWII and, in an especially personal vein for Hoover, thanked Truman for making it possible for him to re-enter public service after WWII. Truman responded in kind on January 5, 1963. An exceptional exchange of letters which pays tribute to the finer qualities of both men.
