Situation in Brief: The advance on Pyongyang continued as the 24th U.S. Infantry Division moved to within 42 miles of the city; the 1st U.S. Cavalry Divi- sion, with the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade attached, reached Kuam, 20 miles east of Sariwon, against deteriorating resistance; and the 1st ROK Division, against possibly the heaviest opposition encountered along the front, captured Suan, and continued its advance northwest to with- in 34 miles of the capital city. While the 8th ROK Division advanced north- west to within 13 miles of Yangdols, and the 6th ROK Division moved to with- in 9 miles east of Tongyang, the ROK Capitol Division marched northward 20 miles to the large industrial city of Hamhung. MISSOURI, HELENA, WORCESTER, ROCHESTER, LEYTE, BOXER, PHILIPPINE SEA, VALLEY FORGE, and escorting destroyers operated off Wonsan in support of ROK troops ashore, and continued minesweeping operations. THESEUS group supported minesweeping operations off Haeju. Naval air sorties were restricted to 55, because of bad weather during period ending 2400/16 (KT). On 16 October, U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 251 sorties including 84 combat. On 17 October, 27 B-29's were dispatched to attack visually and by radar, rail and highway interdiction targets and marshaling yards, (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: High scattered clouds over north Korea, becoming broken to low overcast at 2,000 feet in central and south Korea. Visibility in north and central Korea 10 miles, lowering to 1 to 3 miles in early morning haze. Visibility in south Korea 1 to 3 miles in light rain, Forecast: Scattered low clouds over all Korea, except southeast coast where low clouds become broken.
