Weather: Broken low clouds on the North Korea west coast becoming multilayered with the approach of a cold front. Intermittent snow fell at all bases for about eight hours. Maximum battle area temperature was 40 degrees; minimum was near O. Forecast: Clear over North and South Korea with occasional seat- tered low clouds. Battle area temperatures: Maximum 20 degrees, minimum near O. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy forces offered stiff resistance in the west sector and launched several counterattacks of company size against attacking UN forces in,the area five miles northeast of Panmunjom. In the east-central sector, in the vicinity of Amdong, several probing attacks were reported; one of company size forced temporary withdrawal of a UN OP. Elsewhere across the front, scattered small groups opposed UN patrols, while in the east sector several minor prob- ing attacks were made. A further report of the bombing 11 miles southeast of Kosong on 2 January states that the aircraft was a twin-engine, conventional, TU-2 type, and that 4 100-pound bombs were found which were not of US manu- facture. Enemy antiaircraft located two miles southwest of Pyonggang shot down a friendly T-6 observation aircraft on 3 January. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period 2-3 January is 1, 257, of which 809 were south- bound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General: UN elements in the west sector initiated limited of- fensive operations to consolidate forward positions in the area five miles north- east of Panmunjom, and secured most objectives after overcoming stiff resis- tance and repulsing several enemy counterattacks. In the éast-central sector, several enemy attacks were repulsed, and a friendly counterattack restored an outpost position. Elsewhere across the front, UN-forces continued aggressive Security COTE
