Weather: The weather for the period 8 through 10 September ranged from good to nonoperational. On the 8th, the early morning had nonoperational weather with heavy rain and low overcast. On the 9th, and early on the 10th, it was clear, but the period closed late on the 10th with rain and marginal flying conditions. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity diminished during the period, except in the central sector. Here severe fighting, including hand-to-hand combat, continued over terrain posi- tions in the Capitol ROK Division sector, southeast of KUMSONG. UN attacks to regain these positions met stubborn resistance from enemy in company and two company strength in see-saw fighting during the period. Enemy counterattacks up to two-company strength were launched and on 10 Sep regained positions two miles west of Capitol Hill, previously seized (9 Sep) by UN elements. Capi tol Hill, itself, was regained by UN forces on 9 Sep and has been held since that time against several enemy counterattacks up to two-company strength and supported by heavy mortar and artillery fire. Elsewhere across the front, sporadic and generally brief probing attacks mostly of platoon size and smaller, were reported at various locations. Some increase in the number and in the duration of patrol clashes was noted during the last two days of the period in the west and central sectors, with one engagement on 10 Sep lasting about 7 1/2 hours. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled 64, 708 rounds, including a record-high single day's total of 35, 201 rounds on 10 September. During this period, 43, 628 rounds fell in the Central Sector (II ROK Corps), most of it in the Capitol ROK Division area. In this sector, one enemy attack on 10 Sep was accompanied by 18, 000 rounds of mortar and artillery fire. The total of hostile mortar and artillery fire for the week ending 10 Sep, inclusive, is 136, 079 rounds - a record-high weekly total - of which 79, 504 rounds fell in the II ROK Corps Sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period totalled 6, 044, of which 4, 423 were southbound.
