1. Weather:
Weather for the period was generally not good, varying from non-opera-
tional to operational. On all three days of the period there was extensive
fog in the battle area at night and in the morning. Throughout the period
there were scattered to broken low and mid-level clouds over most of Korea.
Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 29 degrees to a high of 68
degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Heavy fighting continued in the KUMHWA area throughout the period, but
diminished on the last day, and action flared in the east-central sector, north
and northeast of YANGGU. Elsewhere across the front, activity was general
ly light, consisting of minor probes by generally small enemy groups and
scattered opposition to United Natiols patrol activity. In the KUMHWA area,
enemy forces to reinforced-battalion strength continued successful defense
of positions on TRIANGLE HILL (HILL 598) and JANE RUSSELL HILL (just
east of HILL 598), and launched a number of strong counterattacks against
UN elements. On SNIPER RIDGE, northeast of KUMHWA, enemy to two
company strength continued efforts to dislodge UN elements from positions
on the ridge. Northwest of KUMAWA, enemy to company strength attacked
OP positions on the second day of the period, but were repulsed. In the east-
central sector, enemy to battalion strength launched a number of strong attacks
against OP and MLR positions east of the YANGGU/M ARHWIROAD, during
the first two days of the period, resulting in heavy fighting with engagements
of up to four hours duration; these attacks were repulsed. Hostile mortar
and artillery fire during the period totalled approximately 37,800 rounds, of
which approximately 18, 000 rounds fell in the IX US Corps sector. The total
mortar and artillery fire for the week ending 5 November, inclusive, was
96, 000 rounds, with about 44, 500 rounds falling in the IX US Corps sector
and 18, 500 in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic
totalled 2, 865, of which 1, 725 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
